In February two lovely classes visited Sprowston Day Centre as part of Intergenerational Week Celebrations. Members were delighted to spend time with the children playing games and activities which got everybody smiling and having fun. We were especially impressed that they walked all the way to see us and hope they will come again soon! Thank you to the teachers, assistants and the children, who made it all possible.
We were very pleased that our application to take part in the Co-op Community Token Scheme was successful. Between September and December tokens were collected in local stores. At the end of this time we were delighted to discover that East of England Co-op members had chosen us for a donation of £500!
Sprowston Day Centre Treasurer Richard Streeter was invited along to our local Co-op on Cannerby Lane to receive the cheque from the Manager of the store. We will be using this very welcome amount to provide some new resources and activities for our members, as well as contribute towards running costs of the club.
Thank you, Co-op members!
What a busy 40th year it has been for Sprowston Day Centre. We have had our ups and downs; said goodbye to old friends and greeted new people. Struggled with funding constraints and had to lose one of our days, but found that we can go on and look to the future still offering the same great service to the community.
To celebrate 40 years since the Day Centre began, 80 people from times of old and new gathered together for Afternoon Tea at the Old Rectory, Crostwick. Started in 1978, the club has a long history of hard work by committed volunteers. The club has gone from strength to strength over the years and everyone enjoyed celebrating the 40th birthday. Club chairperson Margaret Wynn, MBE, cut the cake, assisted by Revd Canon Simon Stokes who kindly gave a speech. Entertainment was provided by Terry Adams, who’s foot-tapping music ensured the dance floor was full!
The club had a successful application to the Co-op’s Community Token Scheme and we are in seven stores until 17th December; including Cannerby Lane, Spixworth, Heartsease and Thorpe St Andrew. Many thanks also to our local Co-op on Cannerby Lane for providing Christmas crackers and mince pies for our festive celebrations. Donations like this mean such a lot to the club and are greatly appreciated.
We were delighted to share in the wedding ceremony of two of our members, Barry and Rosie, who tied the knot in St Cuthbert’s Church surrounded by members of the Luncheon Club, following a celebratory lunch and glass or two of Prosecco.
Our extraordinary team of staff and volunteers do everything they can to ensure members enjoy their time with us. Responding to requests for different activities, answering questions, providing a listening ear and above all caring for people. We are lucky to have them.
Then again this is no ordinary lunch club. Of course, there is everything you would expect; lovely meals freshly cooked in our kitchen using local produce, plentiful cups of tea and coffee, activities to join in if you wish and top-quality entertainment to enjoy. Harder to describe is the atmosphere – full of warmth, friendship and support. Just walk in the door and you can feel it. We realise that going through the door of somewhere new can be the hardest part, and that’s why we greet new members on arrival and help them meet people and settle in comfortably. Meeting people, talking, listening, caring, these are the things we do best and we have been doing them for a long time! If you think you might like to join us we would be delighted to hear from you. Just give us a call on 01603 419682 and have a chat. We are introducing a new membership package in the New Year which will offer the same great service but with even better value for money.
If you have some time to spare and would like to help, we are looking for some more volunteer drivers to join us. This is a rewarding job helping people get to the Day Centre who otherwise wouldn’t be able to come.
Club days are Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 2.30pm. Last session before Christmas is Friday 19th December and we open again on Friday 4th January. Do look at our website for more information and pictures of our activities: www.sprowstondaycentre.co.uk.
And finally, the staff, volunteers and members of Sprowston Day Centre would like to wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy and peaceful Christmas and New Year.
We have lots of lovely entertainment planned and we will be celebrating the Royal Wedding too.
We are busy getting lots of ideas together to raise money for the club. We have got an afternoon tea booked at the club on Saturday 7th July at 2pm £5 a ticket. If you are interested please contact us.
We are also now planning for our 50th year Celebrations on Thursday 4th October. Its a big achievement to reach 40 years and we want to do it in style.
We have babies visiting from Friend in Deed and there will be music provided by Norwich High School to promote intergenerational activity for the members.
We have had a very busy January so far. We have some lovely new members and also some new volunteers too. Next week we will be having some children visit us from Sparhawk School on Tuesday and Friday. Also, some members will be visiting the school on Monday wearing bobble hats for their Bobble Hat Charity Day.
We would like to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We will be open again on Friday 5th January 2018.
We will be having a Bring & Buy sale. So please bring in anything you would like to sell and hopefully we can raise some money for the club.
Today we have had the faboulous Ben Lake at the centre to entertain our members.
We are having a clothes sale on 14th July 2017. Underwear, nightwear, blouses, trousers etc. Hope you find something that takes your fancy.
The members went to Gorleston today and had a wonderful time at The Pier Hotel. The food was great and very filling. Ice-creams were then enjoyed while watching the world go by.
All of our Tuesday members had a day out at the Old Rectory Hotel, Crostwick. Great food and entertainment. They thoroughly enjoyed their day.
